LAN Transformer
The role of LAN transformer is isolation. For instance, capacitors could be used on backplane to replace LAN transformers. LAN transformer is a special kind of transformer designed to transmit pulse waveform signals. Unlike a power transformer, its purpose is not to transmit power, therefore it can be made considerably more compact, allowing it to fit into the connector module.
In general, in 10BASE-T (10 MBit Ethernet), LAN transformer is also a low pass filter, necessary to get the specified waveform from square wave at the driver. At the receiver, a low-pass filter increases noise immunity. In 100 MBit Ethernet, LAN transformer is really a transformer, and it's always 100ohms 1:1 matched impedance. As the result, LAN transformer could be placed anywhere in the differential line between connector and PHY for isolation purposes and one would be enough instead of two.
LAN transformer are actually quite difficult electronic components to build well. Aspects such as design, choice of core material, and winding method affect the outcome onsiderably, and uniform characteristics are not easy to achieve.
